The Seedy Side of Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia

I wrote a four hundred page novel set in Kings Cross, Australia ten years ago, and at the beginning of May 2005 just when I was gearing up to do a small self publishing run, my Lord Jesus Christ told me not to publish it and to destroy it. It was a hard decision to throw something away my thesis on sexual abuse and as a survivor I had invested ten years of my life and revisions into, but it only took ten minutes to comply once I knew Jesus was serious. A man has to obey. This collection of prose was used to introduce scenes in my novel that I was going to illustrate with in articles on sexual abuse and it’s ramifications on the street life in Kings Cross. This is all that remains. I trust you may learn a little in these few pages. Kings Cross has a dark side with the abused the victims of rape and incest and the abusers the pedophiles living side by side.

Heroin: the currency of Kings Cross, Sydney.

Heroin accounts for a major portion of 80% of crime in the state of NSW, Australia. 80% of prisoners in NSW gaols are on drug based offenses. That’s all the crime in NSW, in a calendar year. There would be a tremendous change in our way of life here in Australia, if society had to adjust to heroin becoming legal, as 80% of the Justice system wouldn’t be needed as well as the areas of insurance, health and teaching. The sad fact of the matter is, that 85% of heroin users have been sexually abused. Kings Cross runs on the commodity of heroin which is the means of survival for the victims whose life sexual abuse have destroyed. Whilever underage prostitution exists in King Cross and pornography flourishes, there will be men who abuse children, and whilst men abuse children, there will be people who consume heroin.

Heroin is a commodity that trades on a resource that is worth less then human life. As a society we reject the junkie and look down on them, attributing blame on them for the crime levels, and yet we fail to acknowledge that our police, and justice administrators are caught between a rock and a hard place. If they eradicate heroin supply, then they’ll lose there jobs, and if they don’t make us a little happy we’ll get angry.

The prostitute a sexual abuse survivor, junkie and the whole sex industry depends on the supply of heroin, and yet in the act of surviving they inflame the sexual abusers and encourage the abuse to re stock the victim levels, as they die from overdose, exhaustion, or suicide. The opium poppy, which is grown in major quantities in Vietnam, is a legal form of slavery our society once again condones through apathy, and every dollar of money spent in its purchase, is made into ten thousand dollars on the streets. With a product that is addictive, and the sheer lengths a heroin user has to go to feed their addiction, we as a society wear the cost of our governments doing business in heroin. Of course whilst people are dying, and we don’t know one personally, that’s fine isn’t it. I’m sure we all think Vietnam happened for the sake of communism too if we try to bury our heads in the sand far enough. It might interest you to learn that ten years or so before the war, The French government attributed one third of their revenue from the production of the opium poppy. Hmm!

A typical sex worker’s client on the streets of Sydney’s Kings Cross

If you think the life of a prostitute is glamorous, maybe you should know that pretty Woman is a fantasy. Oh it was a lovely story, and once in a long while a girl actually meets a guy who is rich and wonderful and treats her like a lady for a night. But home in bed, her friend has a more run of the mill client. This is the bread and butter, and if you walk the streets, and you need hundred to put up tour arm every day, you have to work these sort of clients day in and day out. This guy isn’t particularly rude, or obnoxious. He’s a typical yobbo who’s has come to the Cross, to get a little off his mind. He’s been drinking, probably been with some mates earlier in the night, and you can see him in any public bar in a pub playing pool and having a laugh with his mates on a Friday night. He pays for a service, and expects it to meet his requirements. The shame is that people girls in Kings Cross have to endure the pain, to make a living, and worship the solace she finds in putting the hero… in

The pedophile who preys on Sydney’s street kids

An abuser finds the art of intimidation a worthy subject of study. For a person who needs to abuse to gratify their inner lusts, having a victim of sexual abuse scared is very handy indeed. Unfortunately it’s not until a person loves themselves and is well on the way to recovery as a survivor of sexual abuse that they have the inner strength to stand up to an intimidator. But a good intimidator will leave a victim with no option but to leave their needs behind, if they ever dare to speak up.

Selling sex in Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia

Selling sex isn’t as much fun as it’s cracked up to be. Every client is a rich millionaire that is going to whisk you away. You have rent to pay, a secret life to live, and the daily grind of paying for your heroin. It’s sad that we in our society allow this forced slavery, worse still to know we condone the Child sexual abuse that propagates it.. Hookers, prostitutes, or sex workers are just ordinary girls. They have personalities and feelings, like any other girl, but when they work they are in the business of charging men.

Over ninety percent of them will admit to have been sexually molested/sexually abused in the past and a very large majority of them use drugs to maintain some sort of sanity, and keep the demons at bay. The unfortunate worker, who is so worn down by the work, and life in general, finds herself a slave to the drug called heroin. This drug moves them forward each day, and demand that they return to the street, and its the friendships that are shared between tricks, that keep the whole fabric of their lives from collapsing into a heap. They don’t need pity, these girls, they need to be accepted for the sweet and innocent girls they really are: the girls who wore ribbons in their hair to church before their daddy molested them.

In a year in Kings Cross I spent ministering to the girls in 2001 the worst strip club/brothel I found out of twenty girls that four of them had at one time become a born again Christian. Three of them had parents that still attended church each Sunday. For a year of five nights a week I was the only male company that was a Christian that wasn’t abusing them or using their services. I cry for the girls who know Jesus but their addiction to heroin in stronger then his power to set them free. These girls truly do need a person to rescue them!

Street Kids daily grind to survive

Survival on the streets without regular income and no proper roof over your head is hard. A kid has a few options open, but each day on the street doesn’t get any easier. A victim is a victim and on the streets of Kings Cross, people are only to happy to continue abusing you. A kid has his friends, and they aren’t to betray each other. Many kids come from a violent home or if you can get them to be honest sexual abuse also comes up.

It may come as a surprise to the general public to find that Social Security will only pay you a benefit for unemployment or any other allowance if you have a fixed place of residence. When you have no fixed address you cannot receive a benefit. It may surprise you to know that next time you walk past a homeless man on your streets that this man hasn’t blown his pension or benefit on some drink or gambling, in many cases they didn’t get one.

Another factor for inner city homeless youth is that many of the hostels don’t cater for you unless you are over twenty five, well at least the Matthew Talbot is that way in Kings Cross. With some of the sick acts a young youth has to do sometimes to make ends meet its little wonder some turn into heroin addicts.

Life in a squat

If you are a kid who has found themselves in a position that has you living on the streets, life is tough. The kids of Kings Cross Sydney, get sold a dream in the media that living on the streets in Kings Cross is where the tough street kids belong. They move down just for the chance to live there. They arrive as runaways and do their best to survive with their natural instincts and they take a chance on the elements. A lot leave Kings Cross via the Morgue, and not many survive drug free. Kings Cross is a business, and that is the business of heroin and trading in real peoples lives as a commodity to be bought and sold like the slaves of yesteryear. While ever there is sexual abuse in the home, Kings Cross will thrive with youngsters that will sell what’s left of their souls to survive. Yet whichever these kids sell their young developing bodies to the depraved men who use them, the abuse will continue in the homes of these men who return with un- punished fulfilled lust fresh in their memories.

The roles seem to reverse in this sad situation and the girls seem to work to provide the money for the boys. The boys grow to like drugs and soon graduate into pimps or drug dealers. And whatever the outcome, no matter how long each individual lives for, there is a steady education on the streets of Kings Cross, that will ensure drug dealers in the future and men who benefit from women selling their bodies. It’s tough gritty and real. You can ignore it, or you can learn and make a difference.

Abusers abuse then return to abuse again

Rape happens every day in every Western Country. Men consumed with lust, and driven by an addiction to pornography see women as victims who can be taken any time they wish.

Whilst ever there is pornography, there will be rape; and whilst ever there is rape without arrest there will be rapists who escalate to killing. In western countries we are very fortunate to have enough street dwelling victims of abuse to keep the daily murders from the headlines. But don’t kid yourself! There are serial killers rampant and living undetected lives because their victims are worth less and aren’t missed by society when they suddenly disappear. If you want to argue the point with me: first do some research of this centuries major serial killers and see what they have to say about pornography!

The cure to sexual abuse is found in understanding the abused and helping them heal. We need the males of our society who have been sexually abused to be healed in order to stop the next generation of abusers.

It was an interesting survey I read once and I can’t quote the source, I am not very big on quoting reference sources like an academic, that said the leading age for rapists in the Western World were seventeen year old males. When they looked at the highest demographic for buying pornography grues what? It was seventeen year old males that bought the most!

Rape and pornography are connected, I know it, we all know it but we haven’t the will power or the political savay to stop the trade of pornography!

I am truly sorry for all the victims out there!!

The victim and his pedophile

Every abuser needs to provide the victim of his lust with a reason to come back time and time again. This reason has to be something the victim is missing, and without the abusers input, the victim would feel lost or would suffer loss. In a lot of instances the pedophile is in a position of authority where the child has no option but to stay submissive, or risk harsh punishment from the parents.

In Kings Cross men can buy sex with young males and females. The addiction starts a habit and soon the hunt is on. I had to do a lot of research into this subject in order to get a handle on why my abuser abused me and to get an idea why the abusers abuse and how they do it in order to find a way to have compassion on them and forgive.

And to finish with here is a song that I wrote, one of the first twenty poems I ever wrote. The chorus is in bold. No one has ever put music to it.

A Working Girl

On a well it street a café is warm And welcome shelter from a raging storm.

A girl sits and dips a piece of bread. Into some soup while she bows her head. The warmth, comfort and food bring rest to her heart. But are no real solutions for her as she is coming apart.

She doesn’t know it but there is a solution above. Up in the heavens, a father of love. He is just waiting to give her some peace. To provide for her and give the solace she seeks. But his actions are limited to his sheep on this earth. To convey his love and to help cure her hurts.

The newspapers and magazines say it’s okay. And it’s healthy and should be enjoyed any which way. But sex to this girl has never seemed right. Ever since her father came into her room that night. Now men pay at least, and she earns her keep. And maybe one day she’ll enjoy it at least.

The rain pours down outside never ceasing. And her body starts shaking her need increasing. Another vice, the only way that brings her peace. One more hit, one more trick and she’ll get some sleep. She rises and pays for the little warmth within. And out on the street again to begin.

She has another hit and the drug takes hold. And wanders from her house back into the cold. Another man to selfishly abuse her flesh. And she puts on a performance, cause she’s the best. He doesn’t care for her, doesn’t give a damn. The feelings sort of mutual but moneys left in her hand.

After he’s gone she has a warm bath and reflects on her life and looks ahead in her path. Who am I kidding, I’m wasting each day. But what for a reason, is there a better way? What, or who can help me, who cares enough? And if they can help, how do I kick this stuff?

This girl could be yours, she’s someone’s you know! And what kind of love did her parents ever show? What can bring a person to this sad way of life? And if circumstances were different, could she be your wife? Can you be the parents she’s never really had? And can you love and care for her like a real dad?

Do you know what it is like to really hate life? Can you honestly love this girl as much as a wife? When you look at you children can you see her too? Is Jesus so evident in your life that he shines in you? Our world is hurting and so full of despair. But do we ignore it or don’t we really care?

This girl is fictional but there is one in your city. And we drive past her and say what a pity. You know Christ loves her as much as he loves you. And he certainly wants her to know his love too. Now that you know that she’s down on your streets. Will you act on behalf of Jesus to make her life complete.

Incubus and Sucubus Mythology

Details of the attacks by an incubus/succubus vary form the mild to the horrific. Victims generally claim to feel the presence of some entity lying on top of them, making breathing difficult. In extreme cases the individual may feel he or she is be suffocated… even strangled. Other people claim to have seen horrible images, including black shapes, snakes, demonic forms and even the grinning and malevolent face of the incubus/succubus. There have been reports of heavy pressure on the chest, the sensation of biting teeth or limbs being painfully twisted. People have spoken of their eyes being open during the attack, but being unable to anything except darkness… unable to gasp or cry out, unable to breath or feel or hear anything. Details of being unable to move and being pulled into the bed make uncomfortable reading – but not as terrible as the mental anguish. Some people report feeling an evil presence (or even presences) and sensing imminent death. Imagine being unable to see who or what is assaulting you. Or – in the worse case scenario – gasping fresh air into your lungs after an attack, relieved that your ‘nightmare” is over… only for the attack to start all over again, worse this time because you are awake and more aware of the presence.

The male version of this demon is the incubus, and while it drains a woman of her own strength it has an even more sinister agenda. It is supposed to mate with its victim to produce more incubi. The result of this unearthly union is known as a cambion, and when the child is born it appears to be a stillbirth because it shows no obvious sign of life. Its eyes may blink and its limbs may move – it may even speak, but it has no pulse and its breathing is invisible. Around the age of seven years the child will start to behave as a normal human child, but there are sharp differences. Not only is a cambion very beautiful; it often displays an evil character bestowed upon it by the demonic parent. It is also very intelligent and able to persuade even the most resolute human to carry out its wishes. Merlin, the wizard from King Arthur’s classic legends, was supposedly the product of an incubus and a mortal woman, with some legends claiming Merlin’s mother was actually a nun.

At one time there was a concern regarding the gender of incubi and succubi – it was claimed they were actually one demonic entity with the ability to change its sex depending upon the gender of its victim. It would transform itself into an incubus after it had been with a man, and use the seed it had collected upon the female victim. If the woman did conceive the result would still be a cambion, because although the child’s genetic background was human the demonic intervention guaranteed paranormal development.

Stories about incubus/succubus demons have been told throughout history, and from all over the world. Here is a selection of some of the better-known characters:

Jewish folklore tells of Lilu, an incubus who visits women while they sleep. His feminine counterpart is Lilin. These demons were a particular source of anxiety for mothers because they were known to kidnap children. Ardat Lili was another succubus who would visit men at night to ensure the continuation of her demonic race. The incubus was Irdu Lili, who would visit human women to ensure they would produce his offspring.

El Trauco is a mythical dwarf residing on the Chilean island of Chiloé, who despite his hideous appearance has the ability to seduce women. His piercing gaze is feared by male islanders because it has the ability to kill. However there have been occasions when a strong willed man has been able to secure the services of El Trauco for one year, simply by fixing his own gaze upon this incubus first. These stories are rare, however, because El Trauco is able to sense human presence long before the person is sighted. So powerful is his magnetism that selected women (usually sleeping) will instantly fall in love with him, aided by the fact he disguises himself as a wealthy landlord or even a priest.

El Trauco’s wife is the equally dreadful La Fiura, an incredibly ugly and shameless little woman who will cast a sickness spell upon anyone who rejects her advances. So foul is her breath it will scar a human and turn animals lame. Despite this she is an irresistible temptress who, after using her victims, will drive them insane.

Encantado is a Brazilian shapeshifter who spends his days as a Boto dolphin frolicking in the Amazon River. At night he takes on the appearance of a handsome young man who seduces young girls. He always wears a hat, because his head retains a prominent dolphin-like appearance when in human form. Encantado is very partial to parties and music, and despite coming from a utopian world craves the pleasures and hardships of human life. Encantado can also bewitch a person to make him/her do their bidding or turn someone into an Encantado. At their most extreme they can inflict sickness, insanity or death upon their victims. Fortunately for these freshwater dolphins (yes, they do exist) it is considered bad luck to kill a Boto. And do not make eye contact with one, or you will suffer nightmares for the rest of your life.

Zanizibar, an island off the coast of the African country of Tanzania, is the chosen abode of Popo Bawa, an incubus who selects male victims. His name means “bat-wing”, and refers to his shadow rather than his physical appearance, which varies thanks to Popo Bawa’s shapeshifting powers. During daylight hours he looks like an ordinary human being, but at night transforms into a shadowy ghostlike figure with a dreadful odour. He makes himself known by scratching on roofs and at windows with long talons. He also threatens his victims with longer and more vicious assaults should they dare tell anyone Popo Bawa has decided to pay them a visit. Yet it is claimed he becomes angry should anyone deny his existence.

Hungary’s Liderc hatches from the first egg of a black hen, and is sometimes called “miracle chicken”. Liderc flies through the night skies as a fiery light, sprinkling flames on the earth below. On landing it will shapeshift into a human and access houses through keyholes and chimneys, visible to its victims as a dead relative or loved one. It brings sickness and death to its victims, as well as making the house very dirty before departing. Birch branches and burning incense may stop Liderc from entering the house, but some claim it is very fast and hides in cemeteries. Another story claims Liderc attaches itself to a victim, shapeshifting into either an incubus or succubus depending on its victim’s gender. In a twist on the vampire legend it may drink blood from its host, making the victim weak and tired. This Liderc likes to hoard gold, so its human companion becomes wealthy. This creature can be exorcised by either sealing it inside a tree hollow or persuading it to perform some difficult task, like carrying water with a sieve or moving sand with a rope. A second version of the Liderc is much smaller and live in boxes, pockets of discarded clothes, among rags or in glass bottles. Again the human will become wealthy, and may even find himself bestowed with mystical powers… but in exchange for his soul.

The “Hexanhammer” is a book written during the fifteenth century. Also known by its Latin name Malleus Maleficarum or “The Hammer of Witches”, it contains information pertaining to witchcraft, and includes a section on the five methods used to stop attacks by a succubus or incubus:

Exorcism – an ancient and very common practice, whereby a priest or other religious leader calls upon God and, together with religious symbols such as Holy Water and Crosses, to cast out the demon. On occasion Angels and/or Archangels may also be called upon to assist with the exorcism.

Sacramental Confession – a sacred rite designed to protect by bestowing a blessing of spiritual grace through Christ; similar to baptism or confession.

Angelic Salutation – “The Angels’ Greeting” calls for intervention from Mary, Mother of Jesus by repeating two verses from Saint Luke’s Gospel in the New Testament.

Excommunication – spiritual leaders will ban the afflicted individual from the community until the demon leaves, or until the victim asked for spiritual intervention.

Transportation – moving the victim from his/her house to another place or town where he/she will be safe from the demon.

Unfortunately it appears not all succubi/incubi will respond to attempts to cast them out. A Franciscan friar named Ludovico observed: “They do not obey exorcists, have no dread of exorcisms, show no reverence for holy things, at the approach of which they are not the least overawed”.

A Guide to Platform Bed Plans

Do you want to try your hand at building a platform bed? For those of you who don’t yet know what a platform bed is, it’s an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a single mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If you’re looking to build a platform bed, you’re probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely simple platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and certainly no canopy. They incorporate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, support the single mattress on top. The result is that you get a good night’s sleep, are very comfortable, and yet don’t end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

It’s ever better for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

Platform bed plans can be more complex too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storage units. You can build the storage units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and easily maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

It’s not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a number of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.

Why Is A Name Important?

Why is A Name Important: By Lizzie Ducking- With all the strange and made up names that we give our Children it is a wonder that it could be pronounced but that is not the scary part. The scary part is what do these names mean?

Our name can make up our character and the outcome of events in our lives. This might sound strange but it is true. Names mean a lot and it could be good or evil.

When I was a Teenager, I learned that Lizzie, which is my name, was a slave name. I felt bound by it so I told People to call me Liz. I still felt bound and had some unfortunate events to take place in my life. I am sure my Parents did not have an ideal that my name was attacked to slavery; they just named me after my Grandmother.

I named my Daughter Noctonya. I did not know at that time that Noc meant night. She grew up to be and still is a night Person. She would stay up all night and sleep all day. I believe it is the result of her name.

If we have an unfortunate name not all is lost. It could be blessed. Ten years ago, the Lord told me that my name is blessed. He blessed the name Lizzie and every since then I have been calling myself Lizzie and I have been blessed.

Our name can make our character but we are not destining to any negative effects because we can change it. I am not implying getting the name changed to something else, what I am saying is we can have our present name blessed and things will turn out differently for us.

I can recall two accounts in the Bible where God dwelt with the Person name. Abraham was first called Abram but God said to him that He had made him a Father of many Nations and He changed his name to Abraham, which meant Father of many Nations. Every time Abraham spoke his name or someone else did, the promise of God drew closer. Today Abraham is the Father of many Nations just as God promised.

Jabez is one who had his unfortunate name blessed. His name meant pain. He did not want to cause pain so he prayed and God answered his prayer.

People are putting letters together and coming up with words that have no value or negative values. This is not an ideal thing to do especially if they do not know its meaning. They could actually be speaking a curse upon their Children unaware.

We are all going to have some trails in life but Parents should give their Children the best possible start that they can and it starts with their name.

I have three Grandsons, the oldest name is Bobby, the next is Caleb and the baby is Emmanuel. When Bobby was born, I wanted him to have a name that had a meaning but my daughter wanted him to have his Father’s name so she named him Bobby. When the next one came along she asked me what to call him and I said Caleb because Caleb believed God. I could tell Caleb what his name meant but I could not do that for Bobby and it deeply concerned me. The Lord told me to tell him firstborn. Firstborn is a title given to the oldest son so he gets a double portion. Bobby does not have a Biblical name but he is blessed because he is firstborn. Emmanuel’s name means God is with us so all three of my Grandsons are blessed.

We should take careful thought when naming our Children because it could be the difference between living a prosperous life or living a life of pain.

TOPICS: Tobe Hooper’s influential cult classic, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, continues the subgenre of horror films based on the life and “career” of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. When Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) hears that the Texas cemetery where her grandfather is buried has been vandalized, she gathers her wheelchair-bound brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain) and several other friends together to see if grandpa’s remains are still in one piece. While in the area, Sally and her friends decide to visit grandfather’s old farmhouse. Unfortunately, a family of homicidal slaughterhouse workers who take their job home with them have taken over the house next door. Included amongst the brood is Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), a chainsaw-wielding human horror show who wears a face mask made out of human skin. Sally’s friends are rapidly exterminated one-by-one by the next-door neighbors, leaving only Sally left to fight off Leatherface and his clan.

The Truth About Image Skin Care

Recently, I was asked to evaluate the Image skin care product line. They seem like good products, judging by the information that you can get at their website. But, there is some missing information.

First of all, you can’t order the products on line, unless you are a spa owner or a retailer. If you are a retailer, you can’t sell the products online. Apparently, you have to call to place an order or buy them in a spa, which, of course, means talking to a salesperson.

I have no problem with salespeople, but I used to be one. So, I know their tricks. They want you on the phone so that they can explain “why” their products are so expensive.

They can tell you about all of the benefits, before they give you a price. By the time that the sales pitch is over, most people will buy, without doing any comparative shopping and that’s what the salesperson wants.

I can’t tell how much Image skin care products cost, because I didn’t make the call. I didn’t see any reason to, when there are other products on the market that contain more effective ingredients and sale for a reasonable price. The bottles are larger, so I don’t have to reorder as often. Plus, I can order them online, which is important to me.

Let’s say you are looking for an effective anti-aging cream. Image’s “bio-peptide” cream is one of the products that the company offers for that purpose. They actually have several others, but this one contains the most “active” ingredients.

It is designed at use for night, which is a good time to use an anti-aging cream, because the cellular rejuvenation processes go on while you sleep. The key ingredients in the Image skin care “crème” are aloe, olive oil, apricot oil, green tea, coenzyme Q10, hyaluronic acid, red clover extract, Shea butter, grape seed and cucumber extracts, as well as a polypeptide complex.

Those are very similar to the ingredients in the product that I use. It contains Shea butter, palm oil, avocado oil, active manuka honey, natural vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and a patented from of keratin (a protein similar to that found in the skin) called CYNERGY TK. During the day, I use a moisturizer that contains it, too. It has been clinically proven to stimulate the production of new cells, increase firmness, improve the skin’s moisture content, reduce inflammation and act as an antioxidant.

The Image skin care line claims to provide similar results, but they don’t publish studies to back up those claims. There is no doubt that many of the ingredients in their products are good. My only concern is about the inclusion of red clover, which should not be used by everyone due to its estrogenic activity.

Make no mistake about it. The inclusion of hyaluronic acid is not as beneficial as kelp extracts, which prevent the reduction of the glucose/amino complex. I believe that you can find something better than the Image skin care line and probably for a much more reasonable price.

Conversion Van Camping Tips

Conversion van camping doesn’t give you the luxury of life in an RV, nor the discomfort of sleeping in a tent. It can be tough to safely heat a van at night, but it’s cheap compared to an RV, and you can go places they cannot. We spent more than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van last year.

Life In A Conversion Van

Make your van into something that’s useable for you, especially if it’s going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time. For my wife and I, this meant having space to move around. We took out the two middle seats which, I convinced Ana, would be good armchairs for the living room. Then we had enough space for dressing or cooking. The bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we were all set for camping.

When traveling, you need a system of organization to keep your space inside the van livable. After our first long trip, we noticed the many things we never used. We got more efficient after that. We’re also able to keep the space open, despite carrying many things, by using plastic storage tubs you can buy almost anywhere. They stack well, and if you need more room at night, you can put them on the roof. They’re rainproof with the lids snapped on.

Heating A Conversion Van

Camping in a van can be cold at times, as it was for us in the deserts of Arizona last winter. We started the van and cranked up the heater once in a while, but only for brief periods. The danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is just too great to leave the car running while you are sleeping.

We also cooked to heat up the van. Our propane camp stove burned very clean. Any time it was cold, it was time to cook dinner, breakfast, or tea. This heated up the van nicely. Again, because of carbon monoxide, I wouldn’t recommend ever sleeping with a propane burner going. Still, sometimes a quick warm-up is all you need before you crawl under the blankets for the night.

The secret to heating a conversion van when camping is to give up. Enjoy meal time warm-ups, but unless you have electric power, I don’t know of a safe way to heat a van all night. Instead, you can heat yourselves. Wear warm clothing. Bring more blankets than you think you’ll need. Prepare a thermos bottle full of hot coffee each night, so it will be waitng for you in the morning. You get to warm the van when you make it, and warm up yourselves drinking it for breakfast.

Advantages Of Conversion Van Camping

Traveling and camping in a conversion van costs less than in an RV. The initial cost is a lot less if you buy used, as we did, and the cost of driving it is substantialy less. We averaged 18 miles per gallon on our last cross-country trip. Most recreational vehicles are lucky to get half of that, and they’re very expensive to maintain.

Compared with tent camping, a van is much more comfortable. Even if you backpack, you are probably going to drive some kind of car to wherever you go. With a van, you can come inside if it starts to rain. If you’re backpacking a long way from home, you can save on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

Camping can be more comfortable in an RV, but not in all ways. It’s nice, for example, to park anywhere. We’ve taken naps in parking lots, and nobody was the wiser, thanks to tinted windows, curtains, and the inconspicuousness of a van. At a free campground in Florida we got the best spot, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, because our van was small enough to fit there, unlike most of the RVs.

It’s great to be able to drive anywhere. In the conversion van, camping wherever we are when it gets dark is no problem. Finally, some larger RVs drag a car around because the big rig just isn’t practical for daily driving. Our coversion van is a second home AND our primary vehicle for shopping or going to work. That’s flexibilty.

Cebu City, Philippines – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

A tourist visiting Cebu City for the first time may well be turned off by some of the city sites. The city has several world class resorts, hotels, beaches and dive sites. It also has some areas of the world’s most devastating poverty. Cebu City is the capital city of the Cebu Province and it is the second largest city in the Philippines following Manila. I always feel at home in the city and lived in the city before building my home in the rural Cebu Province of Camotes Islands. Cebu City is a mix of the old and new, rich and poor, good and bad and pretty and ugly. There is also the mix of clean and really dirty or filthy. The rule for anyone going to Cebu for the first time is to not make a snap judgment.

My first trip to Cebu City was in February 2004. I went to the Philippines to meet a girl (Judith) now my wife. I flew into the Cebu-Mactan Airport and was met by Judith and one of here sisters. My flight started in Florida and the last leg of the flight was from Hong Kong. The Cebu International airport is just a little outdated, but very functional. Once outside of the airport doors I saw waves of people waiting to meet people coming off of the flight from Hong Kong. The airport was not all that busy when I arrived and I think my plane was the only arriving flight at the time. As people from my flight walk outside of the airport door they were bombarded with shuttle, taxi and V-hire greeters, all trying to get a fare. I met Judith just outside the airport doors. She, her sister and I all jumped into an old Kia Taxi and we were off to my hotel.

The taxi was old and not very well maintained. The Air conditioner didn’t work and the window wouldn’t go down. Of course that didn’t matter as I couldn’t close the door because the door latch was broken. So, I got lots of air. The hotel was about a 30 minute drive from the airport. As we traveled the city streets I saw crowded sidewalks made even more crowded by the many sidewalk vendors and street vendors. Some of the roads we traveled were moderately maintained while others were in very poor condition. The roads were crowded with many types of cars, but mostly Kia’s and Hyundais. There were also a lot of Jeepneys, a Philippine traditional method of travel. A jeepney looks like a stretched army jeep with a hardtop and a large cargo area used for two benches for passenger seating. Jeepneys are normally painted with several different colors and lots of chrome. Many of the jeepneys are poorly maintained and most have bald tires and the braking systems may be questionable. Also, there were lots of small motorcycles.

After traveling just a few minutes I decided that the most dangerous vehicle in Cebu was the Jeepney, the Taxi and finally the motorcycle. The jeepney drivers tend to rule the road and stop on either side of the road to pick up or drop off passengers. I saw many jeepneys cut both lanes of traffic off just to drop off people and then saw others swerve quickly to the side of the road cutting off traffic so the driver could jump out of the jeepney to urinate along the side of the road. Taxis are no better, but pose a slightly smaller threat because the vehicles are smaller than a jeepney Motorcycles seem to be a danger only to the motorcycle driver and passengers and anyone walking along side the road or on the sidewalk. Motorcycles make their own traffic lanes on whatever little shoulder the road may have to offer or sometimes drive on the painted divider line as a narrow roadway to make an extra traffic lane for themselves. At other times I saw motorcycles throttle down sidewalks weaving around pedestrians. Yet, the pedestrians seemed little concerned of the carelessness and just continued on their way.

As we continued on our way to the hotel we drove through many different areas of the city. Some areas were very old and the buildings looked as though they were ready for demolition years ago. Many buildings and store fronts are concrete with plywood or corrugated steel sheets added to broken windows and steel bars cover the window or plywood. I can’t imagine what would be worth the cost of the steel bars as the buildings were so poor. I was sure the contents within were no better. I noticed several small store fronts with one big open widow covered with chicken wire. These little stores are about the size of a small closet and there are dozen of these little stores on every street. They are called sari-sari stores and sell just a very few items such as canned fish, rice, snacks, cigarettes and so on. Most of these little stores are attached to the front of private houses and are crudely constructed of unpainted plywood and tin roofs. Most of the Sari-sari stores block the sidewalk, forcing people to walk on the road to get around the protruding plywood box. Other Sari-sari stores have a small table or tables along the narrow sidewalks for their rum buying customers and a karaoke machine assist in blocking the sidewalks.

In many of the old areas the sidewalks are filled with vendor’s shacks, tents or some other type of hurried shelter to sell goods. The sidewalks belong to the vendors and the pedestrian is left to find his own way around the ugly obstructions. These small vendor shacks on the sidewalks block the store buildings behind and I still wonder why the store owners allow the vendors to block their stores. The old neighborhood streets and sidewalks in most areas are filthy. Trash is all over the streets, chickens are tied to utility poles or street signs as well as dogs. Many of the old homes along the city’s commercial streets may or may not have running water and a sewer system. Many people use the streets and sidewalks as their bathroom and even bath on the sidewalks. The infrastructure of the old neighborhoods is almost non-existent. There is poor drainage, poor sewer systems, and electric lines hang low to the ground with hundreds of wires attached carelessly to a single wimpy pole. I often wonder how trucks make it under these wires without hitting the wire. In many cases the bigger trucks do indeed hit the wires and knock out power to large section of the city.

The one thing that stood out for me as we past by all these areas in the taxi was the people all seemed happy. Despite, what I saw as great poverty and terrible living conditions, these people, or least many people were happy. Although, most of the people I saw were rushing down the sidewalks going about their daily routine. I thought these people are doing the same thing as other people do in any major city around the world. Yet, my first visit in Cebu City opened my eyes to the fact that at the very least, the city was poverty stricken or had a large population that lived in poverty.

After about 30 minutes riding in the taxi we came into a much nicer area of the city and there like an oasis in the middle of all the poverty was this beautiful Hotel and a large modern shopping mall next to it, as well as several large modern well maintain high rise buildings. The scene was a stark difference to the old areas of the city. This area could be found in any modern US city and looked very much like a commercial area of a US city. The area is called the Ayala Business Park and the Ayala Mall. This is modern Cebu City and it is everything you would find in any modern city.

Once at the Hotel, the Marriott, I checked into a very nice room and we all went to the dinning room for a pleasant lunch. Soon after that it was just Judith and I as her sister went home. Judith then took me across the park to the Ayala Mall, just a five minute walk and once inside the mall I was amazed. The stores were the same as in the US, Ace Hardware, Levi, MacDonald’s and so on. Plus, several Philippine Department stores and many different types of restaurants and coffee shops. All the store clerks and sale people spoke English and most all the Filipinos walking through the stores were speaking English. Others used a mix of English and their native Cebuano. All the store signs are written in English and the restaurant menus are written in English. In many ways I felt as if I just traveled 20 plus hours from Florida to be in a US city.

Although there were many other foreigners in the mall many Filipinos walking by asked where I was from and in general everyone was very friendly to me. While at the mall I bought a few souvenir type things to take home and Judith and I just did a lot of window shopping. I was happy to see the prices of most things in the stores were very cheap compared to the US. At that time one US dollar bought 56.00 pesos. Today it’s one dollar to about 44.00 Pesos. Still a good deal, but today I’m careful in my spending. By the middle of the afternoon I was ready for some sleep after my long flight to Cebu. Judith went home and I retired to my hotel room.

The next morning Judith was at the hotel bright and early and we had breakfast at the hotel and then off to see the city and some of the beach resorts. Cebu has wonderful and beautiful resorts and all very affordable. The resorts are all well maintained and modern. The biggest population of customers at the resorts are foreigners and the staff Filipino. I quickly change my opinion of the city from a poverty stricken third world to a modern commercial and tourist city with a few old areas that needed a lot of help.

During my trip to Cebu we went into the old area of Colon. Colon is the oldest street in the country and has several landmarks. However, Colon is a dirty area of very old and poorly maintained buildings. Prostitution is a major problem in the Colon area as is street crime. There are some wonderful markets and great bargains to be found in Colon, but not an area for the new tourist to wander alone. Hotels can be had for a really cheap price in Colon. Some just $20.00 a night, but these hotels cater to those picking up street girls and both the girls and the rooms are really dirty. Last year Judith and I stayed at two different Colon Hotels. We went into the city for our monthly shopping trip from Camotes Islands. We decided to try the hotels as they are cheap and close to many of the outside markets. I would never stay at either of these hotels again. The best words to describe them is old, filthy, rat infested and full of prostitutes. Both of these hotels seem to cater to single foreign men and any girls the men may find at the Colon bars or on the streets. The area has several little Bikini type bars with Bar Girls (Prostitutes) also called GRO’s. Unless you are looking for a prostitute there is little reason to go to Colon after dark and even then one needs to be very careful. This is not intended to say that all of Colon is bad. There are some nice stores and restaurants in Colon. I enjoy shopping in the Colon area, but one needs to use caution in Colon.

During my first visit I saw most all the areas of Cebu City and felt safe at all times. Of course we didn’t go into the old parts of the city after dark. Rather we were at the resorts or around Ayala Park and these are all very safe and enjoyable areas.I would recommend Cebu City to anyone that wants to go to a great resort and spend time on a beautiful beach, go diving, take a boat tour of the outer islands and not spend a lot of money. There is just so much to do in Cebu City and so many great things to see. Staying at any of the resorts is very affordable just about $60.00 per night and some as high as $250.00. Dinner at restaurants is also very cheap. Meals at nice restaurants can cost just $10.00 to $20.00 for two people, I had a wonderful time during my first visit. However, I had Judith as my tour guide and as my girlfriend. I’m not sure I would have liked Cebu City as much as I did if Judith wasn’t with me during the first trip.

Soon after my first visit to Cebu City I moved from Florida to Cebu City in 2004. By this time Judith and I were engaged to marry and I wanted to live in Camotes Islands. However, we decided to live in the city while looking for land to build a house in Camotes. Camotes Islands are a rural province of Cebu and just two hours from the city by boat. We rented a brand new two bedroom house in the Lahug area of Cebu City. The monthly rent was just $125.00 plus our TV cable for about $15.00 a month. The house was located on a hillside overlooking the city and close to everything we needed. Lahug is a very nice area and now there are many new housing sub-divisions built in the area. Our monthly budget while living in Lahug was approximately $700.00 and that included the rent, utilities, food, taxi cabs and even lots of dinners at restaurants and entertainment. I assume if we still lived in Lahug the budget would be just a few more dollars a month.

Within just a couple of weeks after moving into the Lahug house I felt as if Cebu was my city and I really enjoyed the city life. The city has many things to offer the foreigner and the city is always trying to attract more foreign retirees. It truly is a foreign (expat) friendly city. The largest group of foreigners in Cebu is Korean then Americans, Australians, British and Japanese. There are no racial tensions or problems in the city that I am aware of and the city is very safe. However, like any major world city there is crime, but using common safeguards and precautions one can have a happy life in Cebu City. Driving in the city is something I have never attempted and I don’t think I ever will drive in the city. The taxi cabs can get you almost anywhere in the city for $1.00 to $2.00 and that’s fine for me.

Shopping in the city is great and there are products from all over the world in Filipino stores. Many food stores stock western brands so you will never get homesick for your favorite foods from home. The outside markets, located all over the city offer great bargains and it’s always fun to negotiate prices with the vendors. Cable TV is available in the city and it offers many American shows and news programs. You can go to the movie cinemas and see a new release movie for about $1.00 and the popcorn is just a few pennies. The city has grown since I moved to the Philippines. There are many new gated housing Sub-Divisions that cater to foreign buyers, new high rise condo buildings and the resorts all continue to attract foreigners. The two major malls in the city, Ayala and SM are both expanding. Many of the roads have been upgraded as well as the infrastructure in many areas. The city is a major draw for tourism and is always attempting to bring in more tourist and more foreign retirees.

Any expat on a monthly pension of about $1,000.00 can live like a king in Cebu City. You can live on less than $1,000.00 but I think $1,000.00 is the right figure if you include saving a little each month for emergencies, trips back home and medical needs. The city has very good hospitals and medical cost are much less in the Philippines. Good dental care at very reasonable rates is also available in the Philippines. Many people go to Cebu for medical or dental vacations. Just remember, if you think you want to move to Cebu City do your homework. Do you want to live in a new country? do you want to be separated from your family and grandchildren?, if you are married how does your wife feel about living in Cebu? If you have young children do you want them to live in a new country and what about their education? Do you have the patience and understanding to learn and live in a new culture? Do you have the money to live a good life in Cebu without the need to find work? Do you have enough money to cover any type of emergency that may require five to ten thousand dollars? Finally, what is your reason for wanting to live in a new country? If you can be honest with yourself and have a positive answer for the above questions, then maybe Cebu City is for you?

Remember too, The Philippine economy is struggling. Filipinos with four and six year college degrees are driving taxi cabs or working as store clerks. Unemployment in the country is through the roof. Poverty is a major issue in the country. For all the beauty of the Philippines Poverty continues to destroy many Filipinos and their futures and creates an ugly face to an otherwise beautiful country. Just this week on November 8, 2007 an 11 year old girl in Manila living with her mother, father and little brother in a shanty town hung herself. The reason left in a note from the little girl was because of the poverty she and her family lived. The father not able to find work for months and the mother working for just $1.00 a day. The little girl had just the night before asked her father for P200.00 for a school project. The father did not have the money, just under $4.00. All the girl wanted was to finish school and buy a new bike. A simple dream complicated by severe poverty in a country struggling to overcome political corruption and theft. Please remember, what you may spend in just one day in the Philippines is what a Filipino may have to live on for a month. Poverty does indeed take lives.

I truly love my lifestyle in the Philippines, but it took some time, patience, understanding and a few sacrifices to live in the Philippines. I made several mistakes before coming here and a few since living here. I didn’t have enough money when I came here in 2004. I’ve made a few trips back to Florida to do some contract work and then returned to my beloved Camotes Islands. I’m currently away from home on a teaching contract. However, for me, it’s worth the price to have just a few months a year in my paradise called Camotes Islands, Cebu, Philippines. I think anyone looking for a great vacation will enjoy Cebu City. Those looking to retire on a modest pension can live well here, but just be sure living in a new country is right for you. Before making a decision to move here it’s wise to come on a vacation first and see the city for yourself. Then you can decide if this is the life you want. Once again, for me this is paradise.

Dog Beds: Now That You Have Your New Pooch, Where’s He Going to Sleep?

Take my word for it, no matter how much you want your new puppy to sleep with you, this is not the best option. Especially when you’re dealing with a 75-pound behemoth that’s scared of a little thunder. Your king-sized bed suddenly becomes half a twin-size bed. So next to food and a trip to the vet, a good dog bed should be one of your first major purchases. But what kind of dog bed should you get? There are literally hundreds of choices. For instance:

Large dog beds for the type of dog mentioned in the first paragraph

Outdoor beds for the pooch who prefers sleeping under the stars

Fancy designer beds for the pampered pooch that’s probably related to Paris Hilton’s Tinkerbelle

Travel and car beds for the dogs who spend a lot of time on the road

Heated beds for the cold-natured little breeds

Orthopedic beds for the pooches getting up there in age

Iron beds for the decorating pooches in your household

Chew-proof beds for…well…you know

And waterproof beds for the little pups who sometimes get a little scared at night…you know what I mean.

But no matter the bed you buy, there are a couple of rules you should be aware of. First, make sure every part of the bed is machine washable. No matter how many times you wash your dog, he’s going to manage to smell up that bed. And if it’s a bed you keep in your own bedroom, the odors that will eventually emanate from that bed will give you nightmares.

Second, get a bed with cedar shavings or a thick foam pad as the padding. This will help immensely with keeping your favorite flea friends from becoming permanent residents of your dog’s bed. Third, make sure you buy the right size dog bed. If possible, take your dog with you when you buy the bed. No matter how cute the bed is, or how well it goes with your home décor, if your dog can’t comfortably lay down in the bed, he won’t use it.

Also, pay close attention to what the bed is made of. Wicker is cute and very stylish. But fleas love it. And for the dog that hasn’t quite gotten over the chewing stage yet, a wicker bed is little more than the world’s largest chew toy. Beanbags are also popular dog beds because most people born in the late 60s still have one stowed away in their basements or attics somewhere (yes you do, admit it). But have you ever seen what’s inside a beanbag? You will find out very quickly if Fido discovers how to operate the zipper that keeps the stuffing in the bag. You would be wise to leave the beanbag in the attic and open your wallet cheapskate.

So now that you’ve done the research, go out and buy your new best friend a great bed. Remember to get the proper size. Get one with cedar shaving or foam as the padding. Make sure all parts of the bed are machine washable. And most importantly, make sure Fido likes the bed or you will have an unwanted visitor in the middle of the night…especially when there’s thunder.
